How to Make a Smudge Box
This series of videos takes one through the process of making smudge boxes. As I only make these boxes about once every two years or so, I review these videos prior to starting so that I don't end up making the same mistakes twice.
These instructions are detailed and you may find that you can skip some of the steps, especially if you are a skilled turner.
It is going to take me several weeks to upload all these videos. It is a busy time for my studio right now and I don't have high speed so uploading takes time.

Preparing the Material
3. This video deals with the process of milling the material. This is considerably longer than the previous ones but I am showing things instead of explaining them. However, please feel free to fast forward to the parts that interest you.
5. This short video goes over the correct orientation of the pieces to ensure a good lamination.
7. Here I have re-aligned the pieces to make potential laminations that are roughly the same size.

2. Some additional notes on the material selection.
4. This video covers the milling of the wood in preparation for the laminating procedure. It is important to take away from this video the fact that the pieces are flipped for the second pass. This eliminates the need to have the saw at a perfect right angle to the table.
6. In this video I describe how the laminations are going to work. I show what the thinking is. Because smudge box making is so particular it is important to get each step right.
8. Here the knots have been moved to the outside of the lamination wood so that when the smudge box blanks are cut the knots will be in the waste. This is the last video in this section. The next section will deal with the laminations.
