Stick Bowls & Vases
"Surreal"Spalted Maple
'Stick' bowl 10 1/8" Diameter x 7 1/8" Tall $600 SKU# 86001 This vase, along with others here, was made during my 'Stick Vase' phase. This piece was turned in June of 2008. You can find out more about my 'Stick' bowls and vases here.
Technically, this turning is actually a bowl as the diameter is greater than the height. |
This bowl was made in May of 2010. The red pine came from the Dufferin County Forest. The dead trees sometimes develop a blue stain in them which tends to radiate out from the center of the tree. This is especially prevalent in the branches.

There was a marshy, wet area near our old house where there were many dead trees. However, it was only accessible in the winter time when one could go in on snowshoes and harvest the trees. This took planning and material that looked good from the edge of the marsh in the summer many times turned out to be disappointing when finally brought back to the studio. This elm was an exception.
"Exclamation"Aspen
'Stick' bowl 8 1/2" Diameter x 6" Tall $600 SKU# 1101026 Aspen is a fast growing tree usually found in young forests or around the edges of more mature bushes. It can have some interesting colours and variations. As you can see in the image to the right I found the title for this piece in such a marking in one of the sticks in the bowl.

"Echo, Echo"Staghorn Sumac
8 1/8" Diameter x 9 7/8" Tall Retail Price: $1800 SKU# 1010002 About a decade ago, woodturners were trying their hand at carving their pieces. I was no exception. I made two such pieces. This is one of them. While challenging and somewhat satisfying I felt that this was not the direction I wish to go so on completion of this piece I changed my focus and moved away from the carving aspect of wood turning. |
"The Key to the Universe"Ash
7 5/8" Diameter x 6 3/4" Tall Retail Price: $800 SKU# 911006 I noticed that ash has a soft core. This intrigued me. Ash also has very uniform rings. I decided to drill out the centers of the sticks I used for this vase. The result produced a colander effect with the centers of the sticks and the gaps between them. |
